The E36 is the second generation of M3 and came to the United States from 1995 to 1999. Most are coupes, although sedan versions were made from 1997 (when the auto transmission option disappearedThe S50B30 was the original version of the S50 engine and was in production from 1992 to 1995. It made its way onto nearly every E36 M3 sold outside the United States market. Interestingly, BMW Canada officially imported 45 units of this engine in the first year, but the next batch of cars came with the S52 engine.
While the E36 M3 was heavier and larger than its predecessor it was still faster larger thanks to a new engine. BMW replaced the old four-cylinder engine with a powerful six-cylinder 3.0-litre power unit that produced 286 horsepower (213 kW) in European trim and 240 horsepower (179 kW) for the North American market.
